This concern for the relationship between the old and the new provides an intriguing lens for looking back at the story that opens this section of Mark: the forgiveness and healing of the paralytic in Mark 2:1–12. The story is full of treasures, but there is one intriguing Compare evil-speakings, 1 Peter 2:1, and Acts 28:22. Which they shall behold (ἐποπτεύοντες) Rev., beholding. Used by Peter only, here and 1 Peter 3:2. The kindred noun ἐπόπτης, an eye-witness, occurs only at 2 Peter 1:16. It is a technical word, meaning one who was admitted to the highest degree of initiation in the12:22-30 A soul under Satan's power, and led captive by him, is blind in the things of God, and dumb at the throne of grace; sees nothing, and says nothing to the purpose. Satan blinds the eyes by unbelief, and seals up the lips from prayer. The more people magnified Christ, the more desirous the Pharisees were to vilify him.
What they saw was so much more than a hole in the roof! What they saw was the transformation of a whole human life . . . right in front of their eyes.
